2013: A Shitty Year for Black Music and Black People

When I visited a local Books-A-Million, two magazines proved how shitty 2013 was for black music and black people. White guy Macklemore was on the cover of hip-hop magazine The Source.  With Janelle Monae, white guy Robin Thicke was on the cover of Vibe magazine.

I placed the two magazines side by side and photographed them with my cell phone.

With both magazines centering around black culture, white dudes are on the cover. First, I got beef with Robin Thicke. His recent hit “Blurred Lines” sounds just like Marvin Gaye’s “Got to Give It Up”. Anyone who doesn’t think so should schedule a visit to the ear doctor.

Because he produced “Blurred Lines”, all thanks goes to black man Pharrell Williams for helping white people steal from the legendary Marvin Gaye.

Yet, my anger towards Thicke does not compare towards my anger against Macklemore. On the cover of Source magazine, a magazine many would consider the most important hip-hop mag ever, Macklemore possessed the audacity to pose sporting gold teeth and a pimp hat. Not only that, he sports gold chains.

I photographed The Source separately and Instagramed the photo.

Is Macklemore trying to make fun of hip-hop? As mainstream media continually licks his ass, this shit isn’t funny. I am reminded of the days white people painted their faces black and sung their interpretations of black music.

During these days, many white people hated black people so damned bad, they were willing to pay money to see imitation black people. Looking at the success of Robin Thicke and Macklemore, I guess that still rings true.

The Source increases my rage even more. This magazine spent most of it’s lifetime critiquing black artists. Yet, here they are naming a modern-day minstrel Man of The Year.

That did it with The Source and me. I’ll never buy that fuckin’ magazine ever again.

2013 was the surrealistic black experience. A white girl with no booty was crowned the Queen of Twerking, a booty shake dance that existed in the hood for more than a decade. Also, in my Florida hometown, an idiot was found not guilty for killing an unarmed black teenager. Then, a black guy helped a white guy steal from Marvin Gaye. Oh yea, on the Billboard Pop Charts, not one black person had a number one single in 2013. To top it off, The Source named an imitation black man Man of the Year. Here’s hoping 2014 would be a better year for black people.
